Selfie Etiquette
They are doing it in hospitals, at weddings, in cinema halls, while driving, in restrooms, and who knows where else!
It's the selfie I'm referring to. Defined as a photograph that someone clicks of themselves with a handheld camera or in most cases...a smartphone.
I'm sure you have seen all kinds of selfies doing the rounds. And since this is becoming such an everyday (literally, for some people) thing, a few mannerisms are worth considering.
- Be mindful of the occasion
Funerals or any other tragic incident
The best place to start would be at the end...of someone else's life-their funeral.
This is their day. And as long as you are going to be hanging around while the ceremony is in progress, being respectful of not just the place but also the person whose ceremony it is; is their right.
You might want to consider the following photograph taken at Nelson Mandela's Memorial Service. What impression does it create?
Graduation Ceremonies
At a recent Graduation we were invited to, selfies were being clicked all around. All that was left was for someone to click one while being handed over their diploma! It's understandable that the moment is one of pride and achievement...but there is a time and a place...and that time is after you have gotten off the stage.
Weddings
Oh yes! You are sooo well dressed and look your best...perfect for your selfie. Just make sure you don't include the bride and the groom. They should be given the privilege to upload their own wedding pics, don't you think so?
Labor rooms/ Maternity wards/ Baby births
You know, there are things your FB friends as well as all the others on your social networking forums would rather not have a glimpse of. Of course, this is entirely personal...so you might just want to share it with those you hold dearest than sharing it with anyone and everyone.
- Be mindful of The Place
The Car
Or maybe I should have said, the moving car while you are in the drivers seat. You don't want to land up like the female who was texting to show off how she could text and drive.
The restroom
Well, you might care-a-damn. It still is a public place and there are many more places with far better backgrounds than toilet doors, faucets, sinks, etc.
Might just help if you could however try some or all of these...
- ask permission before posting someone's pic on social networks. You too can control what is shared about yourself, you might want to adjust your privacy settings so that any tag would require your permission.
- be mindful of your surroundings. Not just of the people who might get snapped but also other basic stuff that you'd not prefer displaying...like an undone bed, messed up wardrobe, writings on the walls ;) foodstuff lying around, etc.
- consider what your selfie is about. Kim Kardashian thought the 'belfie' or 'bottom selfie' was worth a click. Umm, yes, if that kind of attention is what you are pining for. Kayne West had an instant public reply to her belfie with a 'heading home now.'
- not forget your age. We all know that age is just a number. How about a forty something year old mamma of three with puckered lips or a tongue stuck out? Act your age. There is something very attractive about it!!!
- pick the best one/ones...puhleeese do not post six and more selfies with your face and body turning ten degrees in each pic.
- speaking of angles, try not taking a selfie looking down into the camera. The female in this video has done a great job and the difference just shows! Check it out here.
- curb the grossness. Not just in terms of body exposure, but also couple behavior and other more depressive stuff like a wound, surgical stitches, blood and whatever else.
- not be fake. Don't pretend. Everyone knows you are clicking your own self. What's the point pretending as if you were caught off-guard. What a put-off!
So, go get selfied, smile and spread the happiness, have fun with friends, don't miss out on those moments to remember. If you can't find a friend, grab your pet. Be yourself. Just remember - Being selfieholic is not the same as being self-o-holic.
