Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru had style, as you can see. He wore his jackets in more than one way. Typically his coat would have a short 1-2" stand up collar which could not be turned down nor doubled as a lapel, just like a mandarin collar which originates in China.
So, originally he wore the western style Achkan Jacket or a heavier, lined Sherwani.
Vir Sanghvi says, 'our version of the black tie is a Bandhgala jacket with dark trousers.' So, if you are planning on wearing one of these, here's a short guide.
Jodhpuri Suit/Bandhgala - Normal jacket length, five buttons. Can be designed in 100% linen, silk, wool and even velvet. Worn with a 'kurta' (typically a white, long, collarless shirt).
Achkan - Generally comes in darker and duller, muted colors. Light weight and unlined. Longer than the Bandhgala. Worn with tight churidars. Has just one breast pocket on the left.
Sherwani - Comparatively colorful, heavier in fabric and worn for festive occasions or celebrations. Knee length with a suppressed waist fit and a slight flair from there one. May have two breast pockets.
The right shirt to be worn with the Bandhgala is a collarless one since only the cuffs/sleeves are visible and maybe a teeny bit of the collar. Though there are guys who wear their collars turned down, it definitely is not as appealing as a collarless. And always remember, you don't need a tie if you are going for this one.
Today, these suits have evolved to be worn with pants/pyjamas/churidars/jodhpurs (great for celebrations or parties) even dhotis or jeans as well as a pocket square and are teamed with simple to exotic embroidery.
Here's a look at some real good fits, fabrics, fashion and faces :)
